SSP Quicksticks Hockey Festival success
The first big SSP sports event of this academic year saw 23 school teams take part in a day of Quicksticks Hockey hosted at Pelicans Hockey Club.
Six teams competed in a Cup competition across the morning.
Fairstead Fury, Clenchwarton, Gayton United, Bronze medalists Downham Prep Dynamos, Runners up Sandringham Strikers and Overall winners Downham Prep Devils.
A brand-new trophy sponsored by Pelicans was awarded to the Downham Prep squad.
17 teams took part in a developmental festival where games were coached and no scores were taken, after lunch the cup teams also joined in with the festival and all games were played in great spirit. Across the day there was a massive improvement in skill level which was echoed by an increase in the number of goals being scored across the six pitches.
Teams in the Festival were – Sandringham Steelers, Holy Cross, Dersingham, Walpole Cross Keys, Holly Meadows, Hilgay Riverside, Whitefriars, West Lynn, North Wootton, Flitcham, Ten Mile Bank Riverside, Nelson Academy, Howard Junior, Gayton City, Ashwicken, Fairstead Flyers and St Marthas
At the conclusion of the event all teams nominated a Player of the tournament and there was a player’s raffle with prizes including a brand-new stick and some Hockey clothing. All players left with a flyer from the club and the hope is that a number of them are now inspired to come along to Junior training at Pelicans on a Saturday morning.
A massive thanks must go to Pelicans HC for allowing the use of their facilities and to senior members Emma, Martin, Marelize and Sam for supporting the event and to the Team of Hockey Sports Leaders from the High schools who umpired and coached all of the games throughout the day. They did an outstanding job and we hope it has now inspired the next generation of players.
